About Diamond
Diamond is made almost entirely of carbon (about 99.95 percent), which makes it the only gem made of a single element. Trace elements can affect its colour, so diamonds also occur in colours such as yellow and blue.
- Birthstone
- April
- Hardness
- 10 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Diamond is the hardest gem and resists scratching, but a sharp knock in the wrong direction can still chip or split it, which is why pointed corners are often protected by prongs.
- Care
- At home, clean with a soft lint-free cloth, a jewellery cleaning solution or a mild household detergent. Avoid abrasive powdered cleaners, and leave ultrasonic and steam cleaning to a jeweller, who will first check that the stones are secure.
- Meaning and tradition
- The name comes from the Greek 'adamas', meaning invincible or unbreakable, and diamond is traditionally associated with clarity, resilience and lasting love. Some people believe it brings strength, beauty and happiness, and it is the traditional gift for 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries.
About Sapphire
Sapphire is the mineral corundum, best known in blue (from greenish blue to violetish blue) but found in every colour except red. Sapphires in other colours, such as pink, yellow, green and purple, are called 'fancy' sapphires.
- Birthstone
- September
- Hardness
- 9 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Sapphire is very hard with excellent toughness and no cleavage, so it resists breaking and suits rings worn every day.
- Care
- Warm, soapy water is always safe. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are usually fine for untreated or heat-treated sapphire, but fracture-filled, cavity-filled or dyed stones should only be wiped with a damp cloth.
- Meaning and tradition
- Traditionally, sapphire symbolises nobility, truth, sincerity and faithfulness, and it has adorned the robes of royalty and clergy for centuries. In folklore, star sapphires were linked with the power to foresee the future.
Meanings and traditions are beliefs people have held about these stones, not proven effects, and are no substitute for medical advice.
A note on value
- Made in solid Yellow Gold.
