About Apatite
Apatite is a widespread mineral group, and most gem apatite is fluorapatite. It comes in many colours, including the vivid neon blue-green stones from Madagascar, as well as yellow, green, blue, purple and pink.
- Hardness
- 5 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Apatite is soft and brittle, so it is best in earrings and pendants, or in protective ring settings worn only occasionally.
- Care
- Apatite is sensitive to acids, heat and knocks, so treat it as gently as opal: clean by hand and never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
- Meaning and tradition
- In crystal lore, apatite is associated with personal growth, clear thinking, concentration and learning.
About Cubic zirconia
Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a lab-created material made of zirconium dioxide, not carbon, and is widely used as an affordable diamond look-alike. It is man-made and can be produced in almost any colour.
- Hardness
- 8–9 (Mohs), usually given as about 8.5
- Everyday wear
- Cubic zirconia is softer than diamond, so with daily wear it can gradually pick up scratches and lose some sparkle; it may need re-polishing or replacing over time.
- Care
- Soak briefly in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, brush gently with a soft brush, rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Store it apart from other jewellery and avoid harsh chemicals, toothpaste and chlorinated water.
Meanings and traditions are beliefs people have held about these stones, not proven effects, and are no substitute for medical advice.
A note on value
- Made in solid Sterling Silver.
