About Topaz
Topaz has an exceptionally wide colour range, including colourless, blue, brown, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple. Colourless topaz is plentiful and is often treated to turn it blue.
- Birthstone
- November
- Hardness
- 8 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Topaz is hard but has a cleavage direction that can split with a hard knock, so protective settings help, and it is well suited to pendants and earrings.
- Care
- Clean with warm water and mild soap; avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaners, high heat and sudden temperature changes. Coated topaz should never be cleaned with abrasives or on a buffing wheel.
- Meaning and tradition
- In folklore, the ancient Greeks believed topaz gave them strength, and in Renaissance Europe it was thought to break magic spells and dispel anger. In Indian tradition, wearing it above the heart was said to bring beauty and intelligence.
About Tourmaline
Tourmaline occurs in red, pink, yellow, green, blue, colourless and black, and many crystals show two or more colours. Its name comes from the Sinhalese 'toramalli', meaning stone with mixed colours.
- Birthstone
- October
- Hardness
- 7–7.5 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Tourmaline resists everyday scratches but has only fair toughness, so avoid hard knocks.
- Care
- Clean with warm, soapy water; ultrasonic and steam cleaners are not recommended. Avoid heat and sudden temperature changes.
- Meaning and tradition
- Ancient mystics believed tourmaline could inspire artistic expression, and it is the gem for 8th wedding anniversaries. Traditionally, pink tourmaline is associated with love and compassion, green with courage and strength, and black tourmaline with protection and self-confidence.
Meanings and traditions are beliefs people have held about these stones, not proven effects, and are no substitute for medical advice.
A note on value
- Made in solid Sterling Silver.
