About Aquamarine
Aquamarine is the green-blue to blue variety of the mineral beryl, usually a light, pastel greenish blue. Its name comes from the Latin for 'seawater'.
- Birthstone
- March
- Hardness
- 7.5–8 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Aquamarine is durable enough for everyday jewellery if protected from scratches and hard knocks.
- Care
- Warm, soapy water is always safe; ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine unless the stone has liquid inclusions or fractures. Avoid exposing it to heat.
- Meaning and tradition
- In folklore, sailors believed aquamarine would calm the waves and keep them safe at sea, and it was thought to bring happiness in marriage. Its clear, water-like colour is said to symbolise purity of spirit, and it is the gem for 19th wedding anniversaries.
About Larimar
Larimar is the trade name for a compact blue variety of the mineral pectolite, coloured by traces of copper and found mainly in the Dominican Republic. Its name joins "Lari" (for Larissa, the discoverer's daughter) with the Spanish "mar", meaning sea.
- Hardness
- 4.5-5, compact material up to 6 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Larimar is relatively tough but soft enough to scratch, so it is excellent for pendants and earrings, while rings need protective settings.
- Care
- Clean with a soft brush, mild detergent and warm water, and store it apart from harder gems that can scratch it.
- Meaning and tradition
- In modern crystal guides, larimar is associated with calm, emotional balance and communication, and with the element of water.
About Moonstone
Moonstone is a feldspar (orthoclase with thin layers of albite) prized for adularescence, a soft glow that seems to float across the stone, with body colours from colourless to grey, peach and brown.
- Birthstone
- June
- Hardness
- 6-6.5 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Moonstone has poor toughness and a slight tendency to cleave or chip, so it is best treated with care, especially in rings.
- Care
- Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, as moonstone may crack with high heat.
- Meaning and tradition
- In Hindu mythology moonstone is said to be made of solidified moonbeams, and it has long been linked with love, good luck and the moon; it is sometimes called the "Lover's Stone". Many people wear it as a calming focus for meditation.
Meanings and traditions are beliefs people have held about these stones, not proven effects, and are no substitute for medical advice.
A note on value
- Made in solid Sterling Silver.
