About Amethyst
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, ranging from pale lilac to deep reddish purple.
- Birthstone
- February
- Hardness
- 7 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- At 7 on the Mohs scale it is suitable for daily wear in rings and other jewellery, though it may need repolishing over time.
- Care
- Clean with mild soap and a soft brush; avoid steam and intense heat, and store it away from harder gems that can scratch it. Prolonged strong light can fade some amethyst.
- Meaning and tradition
- Its name comes from the ancient Greek for "not drunk", and in folklore it was linked to a clear, sober mind. Traditionally it has also been associated with keeping a cool head in battle and business, and with strength, wit and calm.
About Aquamarine
Aquamarine is the green-blue to blue variety of the mineral beryl, usually a light, pastel greenish blue. Its name comes from the Latin for 'seawater'.
- Birthstone
- March
- Hardness
- 7.5–8 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Aquamarine is durable enough for everyday jewellery if protected from scratches and hard knocks.
- Care
- Warm, soapy water is always safe; ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine unless the stone has liquid inclusions or fractures. Avoid exposing it to heat.
- Meaning and tradition
- In folklore, sailors believed aquamarine would calm the waves and keep them safe at sea, and it was thought to bring happiness in marriage. Its clear, water-like colour is said to symbolise purity of spirit, and it is the gem for 19th wedding anniversaries.
About Citrine
Citrine is the yellow to red-orange variety of quartz, from light lemon yellow to deep "Madeira" orange.
- Birthstone
- November
- Hardness
- 7 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- With a hardness of 7 and good toughness, citrine handles normal wear well and can be used in any type of jewellery.
- Care
- Warm, soapy water is the recommended way to clean citrine; avoid steam cleaning and high heat, which can crack the stone or fade heat-treated material.
- Meaning and tradition
- Because citrine was long confused with topaz, it was traditionally credited with topaz's powers, and it was believed to soothe tempers and calm the wearer. Its name is thought to come from the French "citron" (lemon).
About Jade
"Jade" is a name shared by two different minerals, jadeite and nephrite, found in green, white, lavender, yellow, orange and black; green is the most valued.
- Hardness
- 6.5-7 jadeite, 6-6.5 nephrite (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Jade is not unusually hard but both types are extremely tough, making them very durable for jewellery; protective settings help prevent scratches on rings.
- Care
- If the treatment history is unknown, clean jade with warm water, mild detergent and a soft brush rather than mechanical cleaners.
- Meaning and tradition
- In Chinese tradition jade has long been linked with virtue, clarity of mind and purity of spirit, and jadeite is seen as a symbol of success and good fortune. It is the traditional gem for the 12th wedding anniversary.
About Topaz
Topaz has an exceptionally wide colour range, including colourless, blue, brown, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple. Colourless topaz is plentiful and is often treated to turn it blue.
- Birthstone
- November
- Hardness
- 8 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Topaz is hard but has a cleavage direction that can split with a hard knock, so protective settings help, and it is well suited to pendants and earrings.
- Care
- Clean with warm water and mild soap; avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaners, high heat and sudden temperature changes. Coated topaz should never be cleaned with abrasives or on a buffing wheel.
- Meaning and tradition
- In folklore, the ancient Greeks believed topaz gave them strength, and in Renaissance Europe it was thought to break magic spells and dispel anger. In Indian tradition, wearing it above the heart was said to bring beauty and intelligence.
Meanings and traditions are beliefs people have held about these stones, not proven effects, and are no substitute for medical advice.
