Size guide

We size rings in South African / UK letters. All you need is a ruler with millimetres. Rings over R 2,000 include a free first resize within 30 days.

Enter your measurement

mm

  1. 1 Measure a ring you already own

    0 10 20 30mm inside: 17.3 mm = size N½
    1. Choose a ring that fits the finger you're buying for.
    2. Lay it flat and measure straight across the inside, edge to edge, at the widest point, in millimetres. Don't include the metal.
    3. Enter the number above, or find it in the inside diameter column of the chart.
  2. 2 Measure your finger

    0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70mm pen mark at 54.4 mm = size N½
    1. Wrap a thin strip of paper around the base of your finger, where the ring will sit. It should be snug, but still slide over your knuckle.
    2. Mark where the paper meets with a pen.
    3. Lay the strip flat on a ruler and read the length in millimetres.
    4. Enter the number above (choose "around your finger"), or find it in the inside circumference column.
    • Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are warm and slightly larger.
    • If your knuckle is wider than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size in between.
    • Between two sizes? Choose the larger one, especially for wide bands.
    • Paper is better than string, which stretches. Measure two or three times.
  3. 3 Print our ring sizer

A finger strip and ring circles on two A4 pages.

Check before you measure: printers often shrink pages to fit, which gives the wrong size. Print at 100% / Actual size with "Fit to page" off, then measure the check lines on the sheet with a ruler. Each must be exactly 80 mm; if not, print again.

About Larimar

Larimar is the trade name for a compact blue variety of the mineral pectolite, coloured by traces of copper and found mainly in the Dominican Republic. Its name joins "Lari" (for Larissa, the discoverer's daughter) with the Spanish "mar", meaning sea.

Hardness
4.5-5, compact material up to 6 (Mohs)
Everyday wear
Larimar is relatively tough but soft enough to scratch, so it is excellent for pendants and earrings, while rings need protective settings.
Care
Clean with a soft brush, mild detergent and warm water, and store it apart from harder gems that can scratch it.
Meaning and tradition
In modern crystal guides, larimar is associated with calm, emotional balance and communication, and with the element of water.
About Spinel

Spinel occurs in many colours, from orange and vivid red through pink, purple, blue and violet, as well as black. For centuries red spinel was mistaken for ruby.

Birthstone
August
Hardness
8 (Mohs)
Everyday wear
Spinel has good toughness and no cleavage, making it a durable gem for everyday jewellery.
Care
Warm, soapy water is always safe; ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine unless the stone has fractures.
Meaning and tradition
Spinel's name may come from the Latin 'spina' (thorn), and the famous 'Black Prince's Ruby' in England's Imperial State Crown is actually a spinel. In folklore, red gems such as spinel were thought to ease anger and promote harmony, and spinel is a traditional 22nd wedding anniversary gift.
About Topaz

Topaz has an exceptionally wide colour range, including colourless, blue, brown, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple. Colourless topaz is plentiful and is often treated to turn it blue.

Birthstone
November
Hardness
8 (Mohs)
Everyday wear
Topaz is hard but has a cleavage direction that can split with a hard knock, so protective settings help, and it is well suited to pendants and earrings.
Care
Clean with warm water and mild soap; avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaners, high heat and sudden temperature changes. Coated topaz should never be cleaned with abrasives or on a buffing wheel.
Meaning and tradition
In folklore, the ancient Greeks believed topaz gave them strength, and in Renaissance Europe it was thought to break magic spells and dispel anger. In Indian tradition, wearing it above the heart was said to bring beauty and intelligence.

Meanings and traditions are beliefs people have held about these stones, not proven effects, and are no substitute for medical advice.
