About Emerald
Emerald is the green to bluish green variety of the mineral beryl, with its colour linked to chromium.
- Birthstone
- May
- Hardness
- 7.5–8 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Emerald has only fair to good toughness, so it needs more care in wear than ruby or sapphire; protect it from hard knocks.
- Care
- Clean gently with warm, soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, which can weaken stones that already have fractures, and steam, which can draw out the oils or resins used to fill them.
- Meaning and tradition
- Emerald's green has long been linked with rebirth and spring. In folklore it was believed to let its owner foresee the future, reveal whether a lover's promise was true, and make the wearer an eloquent speaker; it is the gem for 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.
About Topaz
Topaz has an exceptionally wide colour range, including colourless, blue, brown, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple. Colourless topaz is plentiful and is often treated to turn it blue.
- Birthstone
- November
- Hardness
- 8 (Mohs)
- Everyday wear
- Topaz is hard but has a cleavage direction that can split with a hard knock, so protective settings help, and it is well suited to pendants and earrings.
- Care
- Clean with warm water and mild soap; avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaners, high heat and sudden temperature changes. Coated topaz should never be cleaned with abrasives or on a buffing wheel.
- Meaning and tradition
- In folklore, the ancient Greeks believed topaz gave them strength, and in Renaissance Europe it was thought to break magic spells and dispel anger. In Indian tradition, wearing it above the heart was said to bring beauty and intelligence.
Meanings and traditions are beliefs people have held about these stones, not proven effects, and are no substitute for medical advice.
A note on value
- Made in solid Sterling Silver.
