About Quartz
Quartz (silicon dioxide) is one of the most common minerals on earth, found colourless (rock crystal) and in many colours and varieties.
Hardness
7 (Mohs)
Everyday wear
Quartz has a hardness of 7 and a "very good" wearability rating, so it suits everyday jewellery.
Care
Quartz needs no special care; clean it with warm water, mild detergent and a soft brush.
Meaning and tradition
Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans valued quartz crystals as talismans. In modern crystal guides, clear quartz is associated with clarity and focus, smoky quartz with grounding and calm, and rutilated quartz with clarity and intention.
About Tanzanite
Tanzanite is the violet-blue to blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite. It is mined commercially in only one place, the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, which gives the gem its name.
Birthstone
December
Hardness
6–7 (Mohs)
Everyday wear
Tanzanite has fair to poor toughness and can split if knocked, so it is best in earrings and pendants or worn with care in rings.
Care
Clean with warm, soapy water only; ultrasonic and steam cleaners are never recommended. Avoid sudden temperature changes and high heat.
Meaning and tradition
Tanzanite was only discovered in 1967 and is the gem for 24th wedding anniversaries. In modern crystal lore, many people associate it with intuition, spiritual awareness and a calm, soothing presence.
Meanings and traditions are beliefs people have held about these stones, not proven effects, and are no substitute for medical advice.
